2012 Dodge Charger SRT: Review notes

If you give in to the temptation of sport mode--and honestly, who among us won't?--you will go to jail. Do not pass Go. Actually, do pass Go--sideways at about 140 mph. You're getting arrested anyway, so what the hell.
Sneeze? That's some wheelspin. Left turn at part throttle? That's a powerslide. Fortunately the violence of the powertrain is reasonably tranquilized by big Brembo brakes, but the whole experience has all the subtlety of a pit bull lunging against its chain, only to be tasered by someone from animal control.
Eschewing any Q-ship aesthetic, SRT adorns the Charger with a full complement of machismo outside and in, extending to a leather-and-suede interior that's as red as a baboon's behind and conveys approximately the same sentiment: "Step aside: Bad mofo coming through." Combined with engine-turned instrument trim, the inside is a deliciously 1970s throwback, needing only a CB radio and a mustachioed pilot to kick dirt on Pontiac's grave.
So what to make of it? At the risk of offending legions of enthusiasts, the whole Charger SRT thing seems a bit ridiculous--almost ostentatious, like a Hummer H1 Alpha or a Gatling gun. It's kind of neat to have, but what the hell are you going to do with it?
Then again, if you trade in a Ram on one, at least you'll still have a place to hang your TruckNutz.
The Charger has raced to the top of the Dodge brand, taking with it a loyal army of drivers who know a thing or two about custom influence. It is because of motorists like this why Dodge Charger Spoilers have become such a fixation for many. It is also why CARiD.com keeps on top with a selection handpicked just for you! 2012 Dodge Charger SRT: Review notes

With all due respect toward the fine engineers at SRT, the 2012 Dodge Charger SRT should come with a helmet and a diaper for its proud new owner, and said owner should have to produce a certificate of racing-school completion to claim the keys. This monster is almost totally unusable on public roads at anything approaching even a fraction of its capabilities.
Sure, the car will burble along on the freeway with nary a complaint, but I dare you to try that for more than five, maybe 10 minutes before you spot a slot in traffic and are compelled by some primitive cranial impulse to mat the pedal. You will not be able to resist invoking "Star Trek"-style warp speed once you've tasted it.
If you leave the Charger SRT in standard mode thinking you'll just have a little low-key fun, you'll be buying rear brakes in a week: The traction control system ends up working harder than the engine.
Everyone has noticed a Dodge Charger burning past them at one point or another, and it always gets our attention. It is just one stylishly powerful ride. Updating the front only adds to this mean-machine’s profile, which is why Dodge Charger Grills have become one of the most popular custom upgrades around. Fashionable yet menacing, a Dodge Charger Grill displays personal style to an area that is all too crucial: the front-end. From mesh masterpieces to straight-up billet icons that sparkle with steely resolve, CARiD.com offers every style Dodge Charger Grill for you to choose from.
Only the most premier quality is what’s going to get it done so that’s exactly what we offer – always. With just a simple installation and a touch of personal style, your Charger has the potential to appear even more dominant than it already does.  Dodge Charger Polished Billet Grille

3 New Sedans Aim to Replace Crown Victoria

A squad of cars and SUVs are fighting for slices of the police-vehicle business.
Rushing into the vacuum left by the Crown Vic's exit are three new sedans: the Chevrolet Caprice police pursuit vehicle, Dodge Charger Pursuit and Ford Interceptor, which is essentially a police version of the Taurus.
The Crown Vic was roomy, fast and durable. Its rear-wheel drive layout was ideal for the high-speed performance a pursuit vehicle requires. It was also as old as Methuselah. The car's basic engineering dated to the 1970s. It could not meet new safety, fuel economy and emissions needs, so it had to go.
That opened the door to a large and potentially profitable market. After being blocked by Ford for years, GM and Chrysler are determined to become major players in the pursuit-car business.
The rear-wheel drive Chevrolet Caprice patrol and unmarked sedans are GM's main play. The RWD Charger Pursuit sedan is Chrysler's entry. Ford no longer builds an RWD sedan in North America, so it developed front- and all-wheel drive police versions of the Taurus.
The Michigan State Police's precision driving unit, which conducts exhaustive vehicle tests that departments around the country rely on, rated the vehicles' handling, acceleration, braking, top speed, ergonomics and more.
In addition to those three sedans, Chevy, Dodge and Ford sell police versions of their Tahoe, Durango and Explorer, respectively.

2011 Dodge Grand Caravan

The major players in the minivan segment are re-doubling their efforts for 2011. Honda, Nissan and Toyota have brand-new offerings in the Odyssey, Quest and Sienna, and Dodge couldn’t let that go unchallenged.
Coinciding with the largest model update in recent memory – six all-new or heavily revised vehicles introduced at the same time – the
2011 Dodge Grand Caravan gets significant updates to make it more competitive. And not just on a price-tag basis either. The company says it’s committed to making its products as desirable as the Japanese, but still priced the way customers expect – i.e. inexpensive.
Dodge started with essentially the same box as before, but spent time tweaking the nose, headlights, lower fascia and fog lights to better mimic the cross-hair grille migrating to the rest of the line. The rear has a reshaped tailgate with new taillights, bumper and tailgate. It also gets a roof rack that hides the crossbars (like the Subaru Outback) to cut down on wind resistance if you don’t need them, while fresh 16- and 17-inch wheels add a little aggression.
Dodge has reshuffled its models for 2011, with the $24,995 Express replacing the old SE. It comes standard with tri-zone climate control, power windows/mirrors/locks, and other usual amenities. Upgrade to the $26,830 Mainstreet, and you get a bunch of upgraded convenience features, 16-inch aluminum wheels and body-colored accents. The $29,530 Crew steps on the Chrysler Town & Country’s toes with leather steering wheel, power everything, and enlarged center console, an upgraded radio with a 30GB hard drive, extra chrome and 17-inch wheels.
Finally, the $31,430 R/T is the enthusiast’s choice. It adds even tighter suspension, more aggressive body addenda and unique 17-inch wheels. The interior is black-on-black leather with red stitching and details. While it’s not terribly affordable, kudos to Dodge for at least offering an opportunity for men to take some enjoyment schlepping the kids to school.
The new trim levels don’t match up exactly to the old ones meaning it’s hard to compare pricing directly, but you’re looking at spending roughly $1,500 compared to a 2010 model. Regardless of the content offered, that’s a reasonable jump considering the extensive level of improvements and the powerful V6 that's standard on even base models.

Dodge News

Dodge has chosen Las Vegas Motor Speedway to take the wraps off its new Charger that will compete in the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
Chrysler's Street and Racing Technology will display the vehicle at 10:30 a.m. March 11 in the Neon Garage at the speedway. The unveiling occurs shortly before the Sprint Cup's Kobalt Tools 400.
"I'm very pleased with the way the car turned out," SRT president and CEO Ralph Gilles said. "We have some issues with drag, obviously, because we've changed it so much. But I think people won't believe their eyes when they're looking at what they think is basically a street car with some flat rubber on it. It will be interesting to see the responses."
Gilles didn't go into details on the changes.
Speedway president Chris Powell, noting that Dodge has been the official vehicle of LVMS since 2001, said video of the unveiling will be shown live to the fans in the stands.
"We're just very appreciative and happy that everyone at Dodge ... has chosen Las Vegas Motor Speedway as the place where the new Dodge Charger will be unveiled," Powell said.

Dodge Journey Wheels

The Dodge Journey is a compact five- or seven-passenger crossover vehicle in the same size and price class as vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4.  Sharing some mechanicals with the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler 200, the Journey's actually built in Mexico, formerly alongside the Chrysler PT Cruiser hatchback. Decent ride quality matched up with acceptably responsive steering for a moderately pleasant driving experience. Fuel economy hit 19/25 mpg on four-cylinder models, and the V-6 front-drive Journey wasn't far behind at 16/24 mpg. The V-6 with AWD dropped to 15/23 mpg.
For the 2011 model year, Chrysler retuned the Dodge Journey's handling, replaced the old V-6 with a new 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter unit, and added a six-speed automatic.  A new interior made for a striking update, while the Journey's sheetmetal was left mostly alone, with only minor tweaks to its grille and headlamps.
